Background & Experience

Joe Sun is an educator, DEI specialist, mentor, counselor, strategist, planner, and consultant with more than 40 years of experience. A deeply accomplished leader, Joe has held numerous roles and appointments throughout his career across a spectrum of institutions, organizations, and continents. Joe recently served as vice rector (provost) of Forman Christian College University, a historic premier private 4,000-student liberal arts institution in Lahore offering undergraduate to doctoral programs, where he oversaw six faculties, 22 academic departments with 300-plus faculty members, and multiple academic support units.

Joe spent more than three decades at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, serving as Penn Engineering’s vice dean for academic affairs, Wharton School’s director of undergraduate academic affairs, and School of Arts and Sciences’ assistant dean. He also held key leadership roles in the university’s student affairs division, in multicultural affairs and the residential system. At Arcadia University, Joe led the university’s process to formulate its five-year strategy and articulate its implementation plan, contributed substantially to re-accreditation efforts, and coordinated the formulation of a new campus master plan. He also led strategic initiatives on DEI, student success, global education, and social impact.

Joe has been an ardent and prolific advisor and has led numerous efforts to improve advising effectiveness and student success throughout much of his career, initiating and launching advising services and centers at various institutions. He has taught students across a variety of subjects and supervised masters’ theses. A university president said of Joe that “[he possesses] an in-depth working knowledge of highly complex educational institutions,” and that “he brings extensive global program development experience, having represented educational institutions in academic, nonprofit, corporate, and political arenas.”

Joe holds a master’s in international development and appropriate technology from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor’s in design from UCLA. He currently serves as a Trustee on a school board for gifted education and actively volunteers with organizations that serve the special needs community. He has previously served on the boards, committees, and councils of schools, non-profits, arts organizations, and religious institutions.
