In 2025, ESI completed a comprehensive economic impact study for Johns Hopkins University, Health system, and affiliated research institutions, which comprise one of the nation’s largest and most complex higher education and healthcare enterprises. Founded as the first research university in the United States, Johns Hopkins operates across multiple academic campuses, major medical centers, and research facilities spanning Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Florida. The engagement required advanced analytical methods to capture the institution’s scale, geographic reach, and diverse missions across education, research, clinical care, and community engagement.
The economic impact study quantified Johns Hopkins’ annual economic, employment, and fiscal impacts across multiple jurisdictions, integrating the operations of the university, health system, and independent affiliates into a unified analytical framework. The analysis incorporated detailed data on institutional operations; capital investments; sponsored research; student, patient, and visitor spending; alumni degree success metrics; and community investment initiatives. To ensure methodological rigor, the study applied industry-standard IMPLAN input-output modeling, capturing direct, indirect, and induced impacts while accounting for regional supply-chain leakage and cross-jurisdictional spending patterns.
Johns Hopkins’ scale and structure presented analytical challenges typical of large research universities with integrated health systems—including multiple revenue streams, specialized research enterprises, large capital programs, and geographically dispersed employment and spending. For example, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was added as a geography of analysis, as a significant number of the institution’s employees live in Pennsylvania—thereby illustrating the immense impact of the institution’s employee salaries. The study addressed these complexities by carefully apportioning expenditures across jurisdictions, smoothing capital investment impacts through multi-year averaging, and distinguishing mission-related spending from ancillary economic activity. The approach allowed for accurate measurement of impacts at the city, county, and state levels, reflecting how Johns Hopkins functions as both a global institution and a regional anchor.
The analysis found that Johns Hopkins generates more than $47 billion in aggregate annual economic impact over the multi-state region of focus, supporting over 180,000 jobs with billions in labor income; and tax revenues in the hundreds of millions across its operating geographies.
