Villanova University engaged ESI to update and expand its prior economic impact work to quantify the University’s contributions to the local, regional, and state economy. Building on previous studies completed for Villanova, the University sought an updated assessment reflecting recent growth, capital investments, evolving athletics activity, research initiatives, and a recent merger. The study was intended to provide a credible, third-party analysis that could support stakeholder communications, public affairs efforts, and strategic planning.
ESI proposed a comprehensive economic and social impact analysis using IMPLAN, a leading industry standard for estimating direct, indirect, and induced economic effects. The analysis was structured around four primary impact categories: annual operations, capital investments, student and visitor spending (including athletics-related activity), and alumni wage premium resulting from enhanced lifetime earnings of graduates. The study was designed to evaluate impacts across multiple geographies, including Radnor Township, Delaware County, the Greater Philadelphia region, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition to economic output, ESI proposed a customized tax revenue model to estimate state fiscal impacts.
Beyond economic metrics, ESI’s methodology included a broader social impact narrative focused on workforce development, research and innovation, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and community benefit.
The proposed study was structured to demonstrate Villanova’s role as a major economic engine through employment, procurement, construction activity, student and visitor spending, alumni success, and statewide tax generation. It also emphasized the University’s broader role in strengthening regional competitiveness and community vitality.
This engagement represented a continuation of ESI’s longstanding relationship with Villanova University, following earlier studies completed in 2011 and 2019. The updated work was designed to create long-term value by establishing refreshed metrics and messaging tools that Villanova could use for years in advocacy, communications, and planning efforts. The inclusion of forward-looking growth scenarios also positioned the University to articulate the future benefits of expansion and institutional integration.
