Thanksgiving is about time to give back to the community and help those who need it the most. Here are some volunteer opportunities and charitable causes you can support today.
Participate in microlending through Kiva, a nonprofit organization with the mission of connecting people through lending to reduce poverty and create opportunities for underserved communities around the world. If you live in the U.S., your donation is eligible for a tax reduction.
The Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service connects Philadelphia residents with impactful volunteer opportunities to strengthen communities and create positive change. Some of the volunteering opportunities include serving in a grocery store food pantry in Northeast Philadelphia, volunteering as a reading coach to help young kids improve their literacy skills, and volunteering to help children with autism at the Christmas gift giveaway at the Neshaminy Mall Youth Center.
Prepare food, pack containers, and deliver meals to Philadelphians living with serious illnesses with MANNA. MANNA recognizes the importance of nutrition in improving health for people with serious illnesses who need nourishment to heal. They provide medically tailored meals and nutrition education.
Philabundance aims to end hunger in Philadelphia’s communities by providing food to those in need and advocating for policies that increase food access. From packing and sorting food to preparing meals at the Philabundance Community Kitchen, there are different volunteering opportunities tailored to volunteers’ schedules and interests. Enjoy Philadelphia’s 6abc Dunkin’ Thanksgiving Parade this November 28th from 8:30 am to noon. The 105th parade is an annual tradition that includes a procession of extravagant floats, balloons, choirs, and other live musical performances throughout a route down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. People congregate around the main streets as the celebration is full of joy, especially for the younger ones.
The Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest returns on November 29 to the Delaware Waterfront. The Philadelphia portal was first unveiled this October 2024, and since then, Love Park has welcomed thousands of visitors weekly. The portal offers a real-time, unfiltered livestream with a 24/7 direct connection to other portals in countries like Ireland, Poland, and Lithuania. The project “Portals” is an initiative that first started back in 2016 and aims to showcase humanity’s interconnection and the global movement in the physical and virtual world.
