The Bucks County Historical Society engaged Econsult Solutions, Inc. to evaluate the economic and community impacts of the Mercer Museum & Fonthill Castle on Doylestown, Bucks County, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The study quantified the institutions’ role as cultural assets, tourism destinations, and generators of visitor spending, while also documenting their broader educational, community, and environmental contributions. The analysis was designed to support stakeholder communications, fundraising, advocacy, and broader positioning efforts by providing a credible, third-party assessment of the institutions’ regional significance and economic value.
ESI conducted a comprehensive economic impact analysis using IMPLAN, an industry-standard input-output modeling platform, to estimate the direct, indirect, and induced economic effects generated by the Mercer Museum & Fonthill Castle. The analysis evaluated both operational expenditures and ancillary visitor spending impacts within Bucks County and Pennsylvania.
To estimate visitor-driven impacts, ESI analyzed attendance trends, ticket purchaser ZIP code data, and travel behavior patterns to develop visitor spending profiles based on local, day-trip, and overnight visitation. The study also incorporated state fiscal modeling to estimate tax revenue impacts and documented broader community benefits associated with educational programming, heritage preservation, and stewardship of publicly accessible open space.
The study found that Mercer Museum & Fonthill Castle function as significant regional tourism and cultural anchors, generating economic activity through annual operations, visitor spending, weddings and events, and educational programming. In 2025, the institutions supported an estimated $16.2 million in total economic impact within Bucks County and $18.4 million statewide, while attracting more than 100,000 annual visitors to the region.
Beyond economic metrics, the study positioned the Mercer Museum & Fonthill Castle as important civic and cultural assets that reinforce Doylestown’s identity as a regional heritage tourism destination. Final deliverables included both a technical economic impact report and a professionally designed executive summary that translated key findings into an accessible, highly visual communications tool for fundraising, advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and external distribution.
