Baltimore-based American Communities Trust, a national community development organization that is headed by CEO Greg Heller, an ESI senior advisor, has announced a partnership that will start the deconstruction of a 3.5-acre site that will be the future home of the Baltimore Food Hub in the East Baltimore neighborhood of the city.
The beginning of the Baltimore Food Hub project, a $20 million initiative that includes plans to build a city campus of food-industry facilities, officially signals the go-ahead for the creation of approximately 141 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent jobs over the next three years for East Baltimore residents, according to the press release.
The release also says deconstruction of the site was chosen rather than traditional demolition because deconstruction is a greener approach and can create 6-8 times more jobs than traditional demolition. Three grand historic buildings will remain and will be restored with $3 million in historic tax credits from the state of Maryland.
