Bloom Energy, a leading innovator in clean and resilient power generation through solid oxide fuel cell technology, engaged Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI) to assess the company’s economic and community impact in Delaware. Since establishing its manufacturing operations in Newark, DE in 2013, Bloom Energy has expanded its footprint, including a new high-volume electrolyzer production line, making the State of Delaware a hub for its global clean energy operations. The study aimed to quantify Bloom’s direct, indirect, and induced economic contributions to the state, evaluate tax revenue generation, and highlight workforce development and community engagement initiatives.
To evaluate Bloom Energy’s statewide economic contributions, ESI employed input-output modeling using the IMPLAN system, a widely recognized tool for analyzing local economi impact. The analysis included both operational impacts based on 2021 activity and capital investments from 2020 – 2021. Direct impacts from Bloom’s spending and employment were measured, as well as spillover effects from procurement and employee expenditures across Delaware. The study also included a review of tax contributions, community partnerships, workforce investments, and environmental sustainability efforts, drawing on data provided by Bloom and public sources.
Although the study was not driven by stakeholder engagement, Bloom’s relationships with local institutions, nonprofits, and educational partners was central to the analysis. The report highlights Bloom’s collaborations with the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Delaware Technical Community College, and workforce-focused organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers and FAME.
The study reinforced Bloom Energy’s role as a long-term economic anchor in Delaware, with a demonstrated commitment to clean technology leadership, job creation, and equitable growth. The company’s ongoing investments in workforce development and environmental sustainability suggest continued positive impact for the region.
